Description

2026 TDLI Winter Intensive Study Program (WISP) in Astrophysics

The Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI), founded in November 2016 with Nobel Laureates Prof. Tsung Dao Lee as the Honorary Director and Prof. Frank Wilczek as the Founding Director, is a leading research institute focusing on high-energy physics, astrophysics, and quantum physics. Currently directed by Prof. Jie Zhang, TDLI aims to foster world-class research in physics and astronomy.

We are delighted to announce the 2026 TDLI Winter Intensive Study Program (WISP) in Astrophysics, a three-day program designed for undergraduate students passionate about astrophysics and astronomy. The event will last from January 12 to January 28, 2026 at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Objectives

The WISP aims to:

  • Introduce undergraduate students to TDLI's cutting-edge research in astrophysics and astronomy.
  • Initiate engagement between students and TDLI Astronomy, getting a taste of research topics of all faculty members.
  • Equip participants with essential tools and hands-on experience in scientific research.
  • Facilitate future collaborations and projects with TDLI Astronomy.

Program Highlights

Selected participants would choose 3 days in between January 12 and January 28 to visit TDLI, based on their own schedule.

No formal talks and no group activities. During the 3 days, students are expected to follow a schedule listed below:

  • Day 1Each student is required to chat with at least five faculty members on the first day, each for half an hour. The student should decide on the five faculty members by him/herself and make appointments with them before arriving at TDLI. Each faculty member would describe his/her group and give out a problem set during this half-an-hour span.
  • Day 2 & 3: each student chose a problem set to work on by the end of the first day, and then spend his/her entire time in the following two days on the problem with the help of the host faculty.
  • End of Day 3: each student presents his/her research to the host faculty and wraps up the WISP program. A written report can be finished during the break, creating further engagement.

Details

  • Language: The program will primarily be conducted in English and Chinese.
  • Eligibility: Open to 2nd- and 3rd-year undergraduate students.
  • Costs: TDLI will cover local accommodation and meals and travel expanses from universities to Shanghai, and Shanghai to either hometown or back to universities for all selected participants.

Application Process:

  • Scan the provided QR code to complete the application form.
  • Upload supporting documents directly within the Tencent Docs form.
  • Notes:If the number of applicants exceeds capacity, a selection process will be conducted based on submitted CVs and transcripts.
