Time-Domain Astrophysics with Large Spectroscopic Telescopes
Time-domain astronomy is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the emergence of wide-field survey telescopes like the WFST that are discovering astrophysical transients at an unprecedented rate. From supernova explosions and tidal disruption events to AGN variability, gravitational-wave counterparts, and the growing population of high-energy transients identified by missions such as Einstein Probe, the scientific return from these discoveries critically depends on rapid and systematic spectroscopic follow-up. Spectroscopy provides the essential physical diagnostics needed to determine source classifications, redshifts, energetics, chemical compositions, kinematics, and environmental properties, transforming transient detections into quantitative astrophysical understanding. The coming decade will witness an enormous increase in transient discovery rates from facilities including LSST, Einstein Probe, LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA, and future multi-messenger experiments, creating both unprecedented scientific opportunities and urgent challenges for follow-up infrastructure. The commissioning of a new 4-meter-class telescope like the Jiaotong University Spectroscopic Telescope (JUST) dedicated to flexible and efficient spectroscopic observations presents a timely opportunity to establish coordinated follow-up strategies, develop community observing programs, and identify the key scientific questions that can be uniquely addressed by such a facility. This workshop will bring together experts across transient astrophysics, instrumentation, and survey science to define the scientific priorities, observational requirements, and collaborative framework necessary to maximize the impact of spectroscopic follow-up in the rapidly evolving era of time-domain and multi-messenger astronomy.
上海交通大学李政道研究所天体物理与天文部（TDLI Astro Division）将于2026年8月9日至23日，在云南大理举办主题为 “Time-Domain Astrophysics with Large Spectroscopic Telescopes”（简称TDAST） 的学术研讨会。
TDAST 会议将聚焦时域天文学，紧密围绕 JUST 望远镜的科学目标展开深入交流。本次研讨会依托李政道科学艺术中心，旨在打造一场具有中国本土特色的“Aspen+KITP风格” 小型深度研讨会 —— 规模精炼、周期较长、以科学讨论为核心。
