 mplitudes are fundamental observables that encode the dynamics of interact
 ing particles. In this talk I describe how to systematically construct the
 se objects without reference to a Lagrangian or Hamiltonian. The physics o
 f real-world particles like gravitons\, gluons\, and pions are thus derive
 d from the properties of amplitudes rather than vice versa. Remarkably\, t
 he expressions gleaned from this line of attack are marvelously simple\, r
 evealing new structures long hidden in plain sight. In particular\, I desc
 ribe how gravity serves as the "mother of all theories" whose amplitudes s
 ecretly unify\, among others\, all gluon and pion amplitudes. These ideas 
 have far-reaching theoretical and phenomenological connections\, e.g. to f
 luid mechanics and to new approaches to the black hole binary inspiral pro
 blem.Biography:Clifford Cheung is a Professor of Theoretical Physics and i
 naugural Director of the Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics at th
 e California Institute of Technology.  He received his B.S. from Yale Uni
 versity in 2004 and his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University in 2009 b
 efore joining the faculty at Caltech in 2012.  He is a recipient of an Ea
 rly Career Research Award from the Department of Energy\, a fellow of the 
 Alfred P. Sloan foundation\, and recipient of the Frontiers of Science Awa
 rd. Prof. Cheung’s research explores fundamental puzzles in particle phy
 sics\, cosmology\, and quantum field theory.  Some of this work has made 
 contact with open questions regarding the origin and nature of dark matter
  as well as the properties of the nascent universe during cosmic inflation
 .  Prof. Cheung is currently interested in the study of scattering amplit
 udes\, which are fundamental observables encoding the dynamics of interact
 ing particles.  At a basic level\, these efforts are dedicated to underst
 anding why the laws of physics are as they are—in particular\, discernin
 g which aspects of the natural world are inevitable purely from consistenc
