 y MEPhI)\n\nAbstract:\nWhat do we really know about the spin structure of 
 the nucleon? What has changed in our understanding after the so called "sp
 in crisis"? How can the contributions of quarks and gluons to the spin of 
 the proton be measured?\nThe talk describes the physical background\, the 
 design\, and the physics goals of the Spin Physics Detector (SPD) at the N
 ICA collider. The first phase of data taking is expected around 2030. The 
 polarized proton and deuteron beams will allow a wide range of interesting
  spin effects to be studied.\nEven with the reduced initial detector confi
 guration\, the detector will enable a broad range of physics and performan
 ce studies. I will discuss the status of the first-phase physics programme
 \, as well as opportunities for the second phase with the ultimate detecto
 r performance.\nBiography:\n \nProf. Evgeny Soldatov studied particle phy
 sics at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute\, Russia\, where he recei
 ved his PhD in 2017. He held positions of Research Scientist\, Assistant P
 rofessor\, and Associate Professor at the same institute\, where he has be
 en teaching graduate and undergraduate courses for many years. Since 2008\
 , he has been a member of the ATLAS experiment at CERN\, working within th
 e Standard Model\, Egamma\, and Heavy Ions scientific groups. From 2020 to
  2022\, he served as Convener of the PhotonID Egamma group in ATLAS. Since
  2026\, he has been serving as Deputy Physics Coordinator of the SPD exper
 iment at JINR. His current research focuses on electroweak multiboson prod
 uction\, effective field theory phenomenology\, and particle reconstructio
 n and identification algorithms. Prof. Soldatov is the head of two educati
 onal programs in Russia and Kazakhstan\, and co-chair of the Organizing Co
 mmittee of the International Conference on Particle Physics and Astrophysi
