Abstract:
Phases of quantum field theory (QFT) is a core concept to unify many deep problems in beyond the Standard Model (BSM) new physics. In this talk, I will select two interesting phases: the ultraviolet (UV) conformal phase and the infrared (IR) confinement/deconfinement phase. The UV conformal phase known as asymptotic safety is one of the very few solutions to realize UV completion within the framework of QFT. By using the large number-of-flavour () expansion, the Standard Model achieves an interacting UV fixed point, addressing the famous UV Landau Pole issue. Applying renormalization group flow as a bridge to connect UV fixed point and IR physics provides constraints on the BSM physics.
In the IR, the confinement/deconfinement phase transition offers a unique possibility to generate gravitational wave signature to constrain strongly coupled dark matter. We go beyond the state-of-the-art by combining first principal lattice results and effective field theory approaches as Polyakov Loop model to explore this possibility. We find the future Big Bang Observer and DECIGO experiment have a higher chance to detect the gravitational wave signals.

Dr. Zhiwei Wang currently serves as a full professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, group leader of the Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics team, and has been selected for the university’s “Hundred Talents Program.” Dr. Wang earned his Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada (2012-2016). In 2017, he was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal of Canada, the highest honor for academic achievement during doctoral studies in Canada (a national award) and received the Best Doctoral Thesis at the University of Saskatchewan, as well as the Ishwar Gupta Physics Prize. After obtaining his Ph.D., Dr. Wang held a joint postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Waterloo in Canada and the CP3-Origins Center in Denmark (2016-2019). From 2019 to 2021, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Danish CP3-Origins Center. From 2021 to 2022, he was a researcher (senior postdoctoral fellow) at Lund University in Sweden.
Dr. Zhiwei Wang’s research field is high-energy theoretical physics, focusing on the intersection of phenomenology and theory beyond the Standard Model of new physics. He is dedicated to developing key theoretical techniques (such as symmetry, resummation, effective potential, etc.) required for new physics to expand the boundaries of research in systems with strong coupling (where traditional perturbative calculations fail). He was the first to propose a theoretical framework for accurately predicting gravitational waves from phase transitions of strongly coupled dark matter and their production mechanisms, providing a new window for detecting long-elusive strongly coupled dark matter. He proposed the realization of asymptotic safety for the Standard Model and Grand Unified Theories in the large limit, advancing the resolution of the challenging problem of the Standard Model’s Landau pole. He has completed 31 academic papers, including 25 published in authoritative international academic journals (with 4 top-tier papers in Phys. Rev. Lett., all as the main contributing author), and one paper in PRL was selected as an Editor Suggestion.
