Abstract: In these lectures, I will first review the basic ingredients of the Standard Model for particle physics, recapitulating its underlying  assumptions and the consequences thereof. Then I will take a few examples in flavor and dark matter physics where simple phenomenological models and their simple UV completions give completely different results. Limitations of effective field theory approaches will be discussed carefully. And it will be emphasized that mathematical consistency of theories is most important for physically correct and reliable predictions.
