Description
Abstract

While the precision of experimental data keeps improving, the likely extragalactic accelerators of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and astrophysical neutrinos remain vastly unknown. So far, only the blazar TXS0506+056 (TXS), indicates a coincident emission of high-energy neutrinos together with a broadband photon spectrum. Blazars such as TXS are collimated relativistic outflows from active galactic nuclei and among the brightest persistent radiation sources in the universe. The recent detection by the IceCube Observatory supports the hypothesis that blazars accelerate cosmic rays beyond PeV energies, challenging at the same time conventional theoretical models. In this seminar I will give an overview about theoretical multi-messenger research, summarizing the current progress and investigating the TXS case in higher detail.
