Scientific instrumentation is an essential part of scientific research and serves as the backbone of scientific discovery. Advanced instruments have not only expanded our knowledge boundaries in understanding the natural world but also opened new avenues for research. The instrumentation developed for nuclear and particle physics research has far-reaching applications that extend well beyond fundamental science. These technologies play critical roles in medicine, security, industry, environmental monitoring, and space exploration, demonstrating their profound significance and versatility. This presentation will review the crucial role played by the instrumentation that led to discoveries from the electron to the Higgs boson and give examples of applications of cutting-edge technology created from nuclear and particle physics research.
Zhao Zhenguo is an experimental particle physicist and a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China. He is an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and currently serves as the vice-president of the Chinese Physical Society. He was the head of the Center for Experimental Particle Physics at the Institute of High Energy Physics of CAS, and the spokesperson of the BES Collaboration of Beijing Spectrometer experiment at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. His career has been marked by extensive engagement in particle physics experiments. His work includes measurements of neutrino mass, research on the strong interaction effects of pionic atoms, physics with charm quark and QCD studies at BES, and searches for the Higgs boson and new physics in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.
