Abstract:
The development of domestic proton therapy systems represents a strategic milestone in China’s efforts to make advanced cancer treatment accessible and affordable. This talk chronicles the journey from conceptualization to clinical reality of China’s first domestically developed synchrotron-based proton therapy system, spearheaded by the SSRF, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (CAS) and Shanghai Apactron Particle Therapy Equipment Co., Ltd.
We will first discuss the original motivations and the comprehensive R&D process that overcame critical technological barriers in accelerator physics, beam delivery, and system integration.
Secondly, we present the technical performance and unique features of the installed system at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. As the flagship demonstration facility, this system boasts high-precision beam control, robust reliability, and an optimized workflow designed specifically for complex clinical environments.
Thirdly, we report on the status of clinical trials and routine treatments. To date, the system has successfully treated over 1,200 patients, demonstrating excellent dosimetric accuracy and clinical outcomes across various tumor types. Data from these treatments validate the system’s safety and efficacy, marking a successful transition from laboratory prototype to a standard clinical tool.
