Description

Abstract:

Millicharged Particle (MCP) is a class of particles predicted by theories go beyond the Standard Model. This kind of particle has tiny and non-quantized electric charge (usually less than 10^{-5} e), and they may become candidates for dark matter particles. Because of its tiny electromagnetic interactions, MCP can produce ionization signals and it can be constrained by direct detection experiments. In a recent work, we study the atomic ionization induced by MCP using the Relativistic Impulse Approximation (RIA) approach.

RIA is a method developed in 1970s-1980s to dual with electromagnetic interactions in atomic and molecular physics (such as Compton scattering, electron impact, etc). Recently, we extend this approach to the scattering process between MCP and target atoms. With atomic many-body effects efficiently considered, RIA could provide more precise predictions than free electron approximation (FEA).

This talk is based on a recent work published in JHEP 2021(03),184 (arXiv:2009.14320[hep-ph]).
