Abstract:
Neutrino oscillations remain one of our most powerful probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. Two of the field's biggest open questions — whether neutrinos violate CP symmetry, and the ordering of the neutrino masses — are now within reach of the accelerator-based long-baseline programme. In this seminar I will review the current status of long-baseline oscillation measurements, focusing on the T2K experiment and the recent first joint oscillation analysis of T2K and Super-Kamiokande atmospheric data, which together provide our tightest constraints to date on the oscillation parameters and a first indication of CP violation. I will then turn to Hyper-Kamiokande, the next-generation water-Cherenkov observatory now under construction in Japan, describing its design, current status, and the broad physics programme it will enable — from a definitive search for leptonic CP violation and determination of the neutrino mass ordering, to solar, supernova and astrophysical neutrinos and the search for proton decay. I will close on the international effort behind the experiment and the opportunities for new collaboration as Hyper-Kamiokande moves towards first data.
Biography:
Francesca Di Lodovico is Professor of Particle Physics at King's College London, where she heads the Experimental Particle and Astroparticle Physics group. She is co-Spokesperson of the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment and a long-standing member of the T2K and Super-Kamiokande collaborations, working on neutrino oscillations and the search for leptonic CP violation; her current interests also include the application of artificial intelligence to neutrino physics. She was awarded the 2025 Occhialini Medal and Prize and holds a Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship. She chairs the NuPhys conference series and serves on numerous international committees and review panels.
