Abstract:
The Sun is a high energy neutrino source due to cosmic rays interacting with the solar atmosphere. These solar atmospheric neutrinos are realistically within reach in current and near future experiments. However, evidence from solar atmospheric gamma rays show that solar magnetic fields could significantly affect the cosmic ray interactions, and thus the neutrino flux. I will review current theoretical progress in understanding cosmic-ray interactions in the Sun under magnetic fields, and the detection status and prospects for high-energy gamma rays and neutrinos. Finally, I will also briefly discuss the implications of solar atmospheric neutrinos on dark matter searches from the Sun.
Speaker Bio:
Prof. Kenny Chun Yu Ng received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. He held postdoctoral positions at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the GRAPPA Institute at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, before joining The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020. His research focuses on astrophysical searches for new physics, particularly dark matter, as well as high-energy astro-particle physics, with a special interest in gamma-ray and neutrino emissions from the Sun. He recently joined the LHAASO collaboration.
