From Compact Impostors to Galaxy Populations: Resolved Star Formation and Feedback Across Scales

Abstract:
Galaxy evolution is governed by the interplay among gas supply, star formation, stellar feedback, chemical enrichment, nuclear activity, and environment. In this talk, I will present a series of studies on nearby and low-z galaxies that connect spatially resolved observations with large spectroscopic surveys.
I will first discuss a nearby impostor of compact broad-line black holes, emphasizing the importance of high-resolution observations in distinguishing genuine black hole activity from stellar or star-formation-related contaminants. I will then focus on nearby star-forming and interacting galaxies, including NGC 3239, NGC 1741, NGC 7456, and NGC 5068, to explore how molecular gas, young star clusters, and massive-star feedback regulate star formation across different spatial scales. Finally, I will present DESI DR1-based studies of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) and starburst galaxies, which provide statistical insight into chemical enrichment and intense star formation in broader galaxy populations.
By combining detailed studies of nearby galaxies with large-sample spectroscopic data, this talk aims to connect local physical processes with the global evolution of galaxies.

Biography:
Dr. Yulong Gao (高玉龙) is an Associate Professor and M.Sc. supervisor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy/Research Center of Astronomy, Qinghai University. He received his B.Sc. in physics from Xiamen University in 2014 and his Ph.D. in astronomy from USTC in 2020. From 2019 to 2020 he was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Tokyo. He was an Associate Research Fellow at the School of Astronomy and Space Science, Nanjing University,from 2021 to 2025. At 2025, he was selected for the Qinghai Province "Kunlun Talents" Program.
His research interests focus on galaxy evolution and star formation, with particular emphasis on the metal-enrichment process of star-forming galaxies, star formation and feedback in dwarf galaxies, and supermassive black hole feedback in massive galaxies. The studies of nearby metal-poor galaxy mergers help to understand starburst origins and metal enrichment in environments analogous to the early Universe. He has published 29 publications with ~300 citations (h-index 12), including 9 first-/corresponding-author papers in ApJ, ApJL, A&A. He has led an NSFC Young Scientists Fund project and participates in an NSFC Major Program and an NSFC Key Program. He is currently leading the development of astronomy at Qinghai University and serving as the scientific lead for the 2.9-m QUEST telescope project.
