Spin Physics Detector at NICA: Status and Early Physics Opportunities

Abstract:
What do we really know about the spin structure of the nucleon? What has changed in our understanding after the so called "spin crisis"? How can the contributions of quarks and gluons to the spin of the proton be measured?
The talk describes the physical background, the design, and the physics goals of the Spin Physics Detector (SPD) at the NICA collider. The first phase of data taking is expected around 2030. The polarized proton and deuteron beams will allow a wide range of interesting spin effects to be studied.
Even with the reduced initial detector configuration, the detector will enable a broad range of physics and performance studies. I will discuss the status of the first-phase physics programme, as well as opportunities for the second phase with the ultimate detector performance.
