Abstract:
Vortex electrons and photons carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), opening new possibilities for high-energy scattering, radiation, and nuclear and atomic processes. Realizing these possibilities at accelerators requires not only generating relativistic vortex particles, but also preserving their quantum states during acceleration and transport. I will discuss recent results on vortex-electron dynamics in bending magnets, including boundary effects, BMT-like OAM precession, and the growth of OAM dispersion. While simple circular motion can lead to substantial broadening over many turns, tailored magnetic lattices, including conventional rings and figure-eight configurations, suggest possible routes to suppressing this growth. As a first experimental step, I will highlight our project at the electron linac of JINR in Dubna, aimed at generating vortex electrons with controlled OAM and studying their transport through accelerator elements. Finally, I will outline prospects for experiments at free-electron lasers and in high-energy collisions involving vortex particles.
