Abstract:
In order to cope with the high instantaneous luminosity of the HL-LHC, the High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) is planned for the Phase 2 upgrade (to be installed during the Long Shutdown 3, namely in years 2025 - 2027) of the ATLAS detector. This talk will cover an overview of the system design and the current status of the project. The Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) technology is chosen for the sensors. The design and characterization methods of the LGAD sensors will be discussed.
