Description

Abstract:

Proton accelerator is one of main particle accelerator types, and has been the highest energy accelerators in accelerator history. Nowadays it continues to play fundamental roles in wide research frontiers. This seminar briefly retrospects the history of proton accelerators, and mainly introduces the roles of different proton accelerators in different fields, including particle physics, nuclear physics and being multidisciplinary research platforms. In particle physics, for energy frontier research, colliders such as LHC, FCC-hh and SPPC as well Muon Collider that employs a proton driver are key facilities; for intensity frontier research, neutrino physics and muon physics that are based on high-power proton accelerators are core research directions. In nuclear physics, high-intensity proton and heavy-ion accelerators are key in producing radioactive ion beams; neutron physics and some precision measurements such nEDM, neutron lifetime and neutron induced CP violation reply on high-flux neutron sources by high-power proton accelerators. For large multidisciplinary research platforms such as spallation neutron sources and muon sources, their performances are highly dependent on their proton accelerators. There, neutron scattering techniques and mSR (muon spin relaxation, rotation and resonance) techniques are widely used in material science, condensed matter science, biology, chemistry etc. The development of proton accelerators in China and their roles in frontier research will also be introduced.
