About CPG Journal Club

We meet weekly (current schedule: Wednesday afternoon) to discuss some important recent papers in Particle and Nuclear Physics (broadly defined). These articles are handpicked by our faculty members on the basis of their impact to the development of Particle and Nuclear Physics and also the innovativity of the experiments. The discussion is led by a different student (two students for the first round) each time. The environment is very informal and we encourage especially students to ask questions. Everybody is welcome.

Why a journal club?

Reading journal articles (good ones of course) on a regular basis is an important step towards becoming an established researcher and it is crucial to start this habit early in your career. However, reading a journal article requires some skills and it is very different from reading a news article or science fiction. To help you, each week we will provide a list of questions to guide your thinking and guide you through the (main) article as you read it.  Please try and answer these questions as you go through the paper to make sure that you understand what is being written in the article. You may need to stop and look up what each term means very often. That is completely fine and should help you in understanding the article better! You may even need to read the article 5 times before it makes any sense to you. That is absolutely fine too! Some physicists spent more than 10 years to study a subject and finally understood it. Understanding that subject in 5 readings is a pretty good investment isn't it?

At the end of each article, there will be a chance to summarize what you think are the main ideas of the article. It is entirely optional but encouraged and you can submit them to me (kimsiang84@sjtu.edu.cn).

We hope you get a lot out of this journal club and enjoy reading about some of the greatest scientific ideas and discoveries first-hand! If you have any suggestions for how we could improve the journal club, please let us know.

Info for presenters

While there is no rule on the presentation style, it is highly recommended to limit your presentation time to 40 minutes and to present your talk in the following structure:

  • Physics motivation
  • Principle of the measurement
  • Measurement and Analysis
  • Results and implications

Discussion leads please add your presentation slides to the contribution lists corresponding to your topic in the timetable.
