Abstract:

Since its discovery by the Fermi Large Area Telescope in 2009, the Galactic center gamma-ray excess (GCE) has been a topic of intense research and debate. Two leading explanations for the GCE ’s origin are a population of millisecond pulsars or the annihilation of dark matter. If the latter explanation is true, it will be the first evidence for dark matter interacts with the Standard Model particles beyond its gravitational influence. In this talk, I will describe our approach to analyzing the GCE using a set of newly developed templates for the galactic diffuse gamma-ray emission (GDE). Our analysis shows that the GCE is approximately spherical and has a high-energy tail at higher significance than previously reported. These findings suggest that the GCE is more likely due to dark matter annihilation. Using these newly developed templates, we conduct a thorough comparison of various alternative GCE morphology models and explore the effects of different masking procedure on the morphology of the GCE.
