Description
Abstract

The successful launch and commissioning of James Webb Space Telescope marks the start of a new era for the characterization of exoplanets. With a total number of more than 5000, the diversity of exoplanets remains to be explored in detail through atmospheric characterization. The atmospheres of dozens of exoplanets have been studied via direct spectroscopy, transit spectroscopy, and Doppler spectroscopy in the past two decades. In this talk, I will focus on transit spectroscopy, which is sensitive to the opacity sources at the planetary day-night terminator and accessible by a very diverse exoplanet sample. I will present our recent results in search of alkali metals, metal oxides, and hazes based on optical spectrophotometry and Doppler spectroscopy acquired with ground-based telescopes (e.g., GTC, VLT, Palomar 200-inch). I will discuss the critical role of optical wavelength to determine planetary cloud properties and stellar contaminations in the era of JWST.

Biography

Dr. Guo Chen is an associate research professor at Purple Mountain Observatory. He received his PhD from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2014. He visited Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany as an exchange student between 2010 and 2012, and worked as a postdoc at Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Spain between 2015 and 2018. The research interests of Dr. Chen are focused on the observational characterization of exoplanet atmospheres, mainly based on transit spectroscopy and Doppler spectroscopy.
