Description
Abstract

Constraints from meteoritics (e.g., age of the Solar System, chemical and isotopic compositions of the Solar System) covered a wide range of studies, such as geology, planetary science, and astronomy. Chondrites (undifferentiated meteorites) are the fragments of asteroids, but identifications of the specific parent asteroid are rarely available. The Hayabusa2 spacecraft delivered the samples collected from the near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu (Cb-type) to Earth on 2020 December 6. The returned samples are rock fragments ranging in size up to ~10 mm, with a total mass of 5.4 g. The chemistry team, in the initial analysis of Hayabusa2, measured bulk chemical and isotopic compositions of Ryugu samples. They are mainly composed of materials like carbonaceous chondrite meteorite, notably the CI (Ivuna-type) group. CI group possesses the most primitive chemical compositions among extraterrestrial materials. Therefore, the elemental abundance of Ryugu samples potentially represents the average of the Solar System.
