Description
Abstract

Since the first discovery of exoplanets around sun-like stars in 1995, which was recognized with the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics, the field of exoplanet research has remained at the cutting edge of astronomical exploration, undergoing rapid advancements. The number of known exoplanets has exceeded 5,000, and it is expected that this number will exceed 100,000 by 2030. The research focus has evolved from the individual exploration of exoplanets to the comprehensive analysis of exoplanet populations. Concurrently, the scope of exoplanet discoveries has broadened, extending from the immediate vicinity of our solar system within 100-200 parsecs (pc) to vast regions spanning thousands of pc, encompassing diverse regions of the Milky Way Galaxy. In this talk, I will highlight the significant progress achieved in the exoplanet census within the broader context of the Milky Way Galaxy, leveraging data from large-scale stellar surveys such as LAMOST, SDSS, and Gaia, which is of great significance for understanding the diversity of planetary systems and the formation and evolution mechanisms behind them.

Biography

Ji-Wei XIE, born in 1984, commenced his academic journey in 2006 by earning a bachelor's degree in Astronomy from Nanjing University. Subsequently, he embarked on a joint PhD program between Nanjing University and the University of Florida, obtained his PhD in 2011. Immediately after, he joined the University of Toronto as a post-doc researcher from 2011 to 2013 from 2011 to 2013. Since 2014, he has served as an associate professor at the School of Astronomy and Space Science, Nanjing University, and in 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Professor.

Professor XIE's research interests span both theoretical and observational aspects of exoplanets. Recently, he has concentrated his efforts on statistical studies of extensive exoplanet samples, seeking to broaden our comprehension of the remarkable diversity, formation, and evolution of planetary systems.
